Patrick Crawford is a self-taught wood crafter. His works include boxes, toys, and scroll saw art, but he specializes in wood turning. Recently, Patrick has become interested in segmented and basket illusion turning where turned pieces may be crafted from different types of wood or embellished to resemble woven basketry. Much of his inspiration comes from the interplay of repeating geometric patterns with the curvature of turned objects. He is currently living in Sechelt, BC.
I am a self-taught crafter of mainly small wood objects. Recently, I’ve dedicated most of my focus and time to use wood turning to create objects that are beautiful, useful, and that often mimic woven basketry. I draw my inspiration from several sources, including nature, the colour, grain, and feel of wood, and the interplay of repeating geometric patterns with the curvature of turned objects. This has pushed me to discover new ways to embellish my turnings through carving, texturing, colouring, and using different types of woods within the same turning. I hope that my turnings help people enjoy the beauty and marvels of wood and illusion and take inspiration from these. I also look forward to exploring new avenues and perspectives of wood turning as I, and the world around me, continues to evolve.
